Set a build orientation constraint

Lock a part's build orientation from the quote configuration UI so it goes to production exactly as intended.

When a part needs to be manufactured in a specific orientation to preserve tolerances, surface finish, or structural integrity, you can lock that orientation directly from the quote configurer. The constraint stays with the part through the entire production workflow.

💡 Customers can also set a "Use Original Orientation" constraint from the storefront, which locks the part to the orientation of their uploaded CAD file. This guide covers the manufacturer-side workflow, where you set or adjust orientation at any point during quoting.

Who can use this

Fixed orientation constraints are available on Pro and Factory Floor subscriptions. You need to enable the feature before it appears in the UI:

  1. Navigate to Organisation from the main sidebar and select General.
  2. Find the Manufacturing Constraints section and toggle Enable Fixed Orientation Constraints on.
  3. Click Save.

Set an orientation constraint

  1. Open the quote or order you want to configure.
  2. Click on the part you want to constrain to open the Part Configurer.
  3. In the model viewer, click Set Orientation.
  4. A rotation gizmo appears over the model. Drag the handles to rotate the part into the correct build orientation.
  5. When the orientation looks right, click Confirm Orientation.

A fixed orientation icon appears on the part card to confirm the constraint is active.

Change an existing constraint

If a part already has a constraint, the model viewer shows it in that orientation when you open the configurer.

  1. Click Set Orientation again.
  2. The gizmo starts from the current orientation so you can adjust from where you left off.
  3. Click Confirm Orientation to save.

Remove a constraint

  1. Open the Part Configurer for the part.
  2. Click Set Orientation to enter orientation mode.
  3. Click Clear Constraint.
  4. Click Confirm.

The fixed orientation icon disappears from the part card once removed.
